It might not have been strawman, it could've been just an introduction of a new topic, as people are allowed to discuss several things at once as long both are aware of it and have similar expectations. Because low intelligence being linked with bigotry, doesn't mean humility is linked with high intelligence, in any case, it's just tangential to that original topic. He doesn't seem to stake too much of himself into the discussion, and maintains some level of "I could be wrong", which is entirely healthy.
