True. You both know your stuff, concerning Revan. My question was more from an in-game standpoint, which PT was answering, rather than an overall assessment. Since that's been brought up, though, where would you classify him?

I'm not a Revan expert as much as I am an expert on analyzing fighting styles in Star Wars.

Really I think your question would be better directed at Ant, the guy who seems to know more about Revan than anyone else with the exception of Drew Karpyshyn.

I know a decent amount about Revan, but this just kind of sparked my curiosity to get more info. If Ant wants to respond, that would be great. Otherwise, I'll get back to the thread. I'm still sticking with Team 2 in this fight.

Yeah because I'm pretty sure Carthage set this up as a spite thread in team two's favor.

It would only be spite if Darth Bane were included.

If Malak were replaced with someone like Bane, Plagueis, or even Ulic Qel-Droma, then the match would be much closer.

Both Ant and I have our respective views on Revan's skills as a duelist. Both of our works compliment eachother quite nicely, aside from the force based precognition vs tactical foresight thing that we disagree on.

Yet in the game, you receive the "Battle Precognition" ability directly after she teaches it to you. 😛

If Revan knows Force in Balance, then does that mean he's classified as a Sage in game?

According to The Old Republic Encyclopedia, he is either a Guardian or Sentinel, being listed under the "Jedi Knight" class.

Though, game-mechanics aside, all evidence points to him being a Jedi Guardian. The descriptions of the other two classes during the Knights of the Old Republic do not fit Revan's objectives at all.

- - - - -
"Jedi Consulars seek to bring balance to the universe. They focus less on physical combat and more on mental disciplines in order to augment their mastery of the Force."
--Jedi Enclave on Dantooine Training Computer (Knights of the Old Republic)

Bastila Shan states in the game that Revan lacks discipline and can be a threat with his power even after his training. Also if you look at his training, though while Revan does learn "patience and discipline", majority of his training seemed to revolve around "intense training" for the "physical demands of the Order." Plus, to be fair, his job was to hunt down Darth Malak. Mental discipline is only required to the point to not fall once again a Sith in Revan's case, not really much further. As The Old Republic: Revan states, the Council had no need for Revan after Darth Malak's death.

- - - - -
"Jedi Sentinels ferret out deceit and injustice, bringing them to light. They strike a balance between the physical and mental disciplines of the Jedi Order."
--Jedi Enclave on Dantooine Training Computer (Knights of the Old Republic)

The other one, the Jedi Sentinel, is rather not like Revan's personality displayed in every other canonical source, which is that Revan accepts the death and sacrifices of others for victory. While for much of Knights of the Old Republic his personality was completely wiped, it is a fair assumption to assume by his confrontation with Darth Malak, a fair amount of his former self as the Dark Lord has returned. Though the difference is he stayed true to the Jedi ways. Plus, like the above example, being a Sentinel does not fit the objectives and standards he needs to be, which is despite what the council says: a weapon capable of overcoming Darth Malak.

- - - - -
"- Jedi Guardians battle against the forces of evil and the dark side. They focus on combat training and masterful use of the lightsaber."
--Jedi Enclave on Dantooine Training Computer (Knights of the Old Republic)

This description ultimately fits Revan the best. In his training we see him to extensive physical training, and during the game he constantly fights Dark Jedi and other forces. Being used as a "weapon" of the Jedi to defeat Darth Malak, being trained in this is only logical. This is further supported by the fact that every picture of Revan in Knights of the Old Republic shows him with a blue lightsaber, in which is the color the player receives if they choose the Jedi Guardian.

"REVAN RARELY VISITED the Jedi Temple on Coruscant anymore. Though technically still a member of the Order, he couldn’t help but feel like an intruder as he mounted the steps and passed between the twin rows of statues that stood guard at the entrance.

Many Jedi, particularly the Padawans and younger Jedi Knights, considered him a hero, a living legend. But the more conservative Masters held a very different view. Some resented him for leading thousands of Jedi to their deaths in the war against the Mandalorians. Others could not forgive him for the millions of Republic soldiers and citizens killed when he and Malak returned from the Unknown Regions as conquerors. Officially, he had been redeemed and returned to the light, but there were those who still felt he bore the indelible corruption of the dark side.

To be fair, Revan had done little to try to convince them otherwise.

At the top of the stairs he passed through the Temple entrance, crossing the long, marble floor as he made his way to the interior courtyard.

The Council had offered to find a suitable Master to retrain him in the proper ways of the Jedi—an offer he had flatly refused. Revan had learned too much about the Force, both the light side and the dark, to take instruction like some common Padawan. His contrariness might have been overlooked had Bastila not chosen a similar path. At one time she had been the Order’s bright young star. But Malak had temporarily turned her to the dark side, and the Council believed that she also needed to be retrained. When she refused, some of them saw a familiar pattern: Revan leading a promising young Jedi away from the accepted teachings of the Order.

Their marriage further exacerbated the situation. The Jedi Order opposed emotional attachments, believing they were a stepping-stone to destruction. They taught that love begat jealousy, which led to the dark side. But Revan had seen its redemptive powers firsthand. It was his love that had brought Bastila back to the light; their emotional bond had wrought salvation for both of them.

He hadn’t always felt this way. In the first few weeks after Malak’s defeat, when he was still being honored and feted as the savior of the galaxy, he had approached the Council with an offer to share his new understanding of the Force with the other members of the Order. He had expected some resistance, of course. The Council was stuck in the old ways. They didn’t understand that the Force was alive. They couldn’t accept that it had evolved beyond their staid teachings. Yet he had been unprepared for the sheer hostility of the Council’s reaction.

Not only did they reject his offer, but a handful of Councilors had wanted to banish him from the Order. Fortunately, cooler heads had prevailed. Revan was a hero. The tale of his redemption and return to the light had spread throughout the galaxy … though the sordid details of how the Jedi had stripped away his identity had been carefully excised. The wiser members of the Council understood that the legend of Revan was far too valuable to throw away simply because they no longer had any use for the man himself.

In the end a compromise was reached. The Jedi would not speak out against his marriage to Bastila. Officially, both would still be recognized as Jedi in good standing, with all corresponding rights and privileges. In exchange, Revan promised not to spread his heresy to other members of the Order."

At first, Bastila wanted to reject their terms. But Revan convinced her that an ideological war with the Jedi Council served no purpose. They had done their part; it was time for them to fade from history and live out the rest of their days in peace.
--Star Wars The Old Republic: Revan

However, by the time of the Darth Traya uprising, I would easily classify Revan as a Gray Jedi.
Also, the colored text supports my above claim that by his fight with Darth Malak, he has regained some of his knowledge of the Sith arts.
Anyway though, he fits both descriptions for a Grey Jedi:
1. Walks along the path of both the Light and Darkness.
2. Stays away and even has a tense relationship with the Council.

Though, merely knowing Force in Balance, which is a technique he created, does not classify him as Sage. A Sage is a kind of Sentinel, something Revan is not.

Very Informative, thank you. I agree that Revan is a Jedi guardian, but in SWTOR, his technique is only available to Sages, which are under the Consular path. That's why I was confused.

Yeah, I don't know why I said they are a kind of Sentinel. I'm pretty tired though. But also, doesn't change the point at all. 🙂

And the fact that Jedi Sages do Telekinesis and Heal does not mean others can't.
Like imagine how screwed up that would be then with virtually no PT character being able to do TK.

Yeah. The absolute limits of gameplay archetypes does not constitue absolute limits in actual canon.

So, a bunch of Corran Horns? 😎

Also Nejaa Halcyon was during the Clone Wars, so there was at least 1 Jedi who couldn't do any TK, lol.

Only because he exploited Nejaa's inability to use TK. Still, Nejaa aborbed all of the energy from Nikkos Tyris' lightsaber and conjured a fist of energy, which broke every bone in Tyris' body on impact. So, Halcyon still went out like a bad@ss.

Yea, I don't really call a mutual kill a 'pwning.' Nejaa was pretty badass, Nikkos seems high-end for a dark acolyte.
