Lonely Shmonely, i'd rather be left alone!
Cheer Up the Lonely Day
Date When Celebrated : July 11 th
Cheer Up the Lonely Day is an opportunity to make a lonely person happy. Any time you can make someone happy, you've done a good thing, and should be proud of yourself.
Lonely people have few friends and loved ones. They may have lost loved ones over the years. They may be elderly. They see people on an infrequent basis.
Spend some time today cheering up lonely people. It's easy to do.....just spend some time with them. When you visit, bring happy things to talk about. Keep the conversation upbeat, and lively. When you leave, give a big hug and let them know you enjoyed the stay. Sending cards or making a phone call is okay, only if they live too far away to visit. What a lonely person really needs, is face to face time with other people.
The Origin of Cheer Up the Lonely Day:
According to L.J. Pesek, Cheer Up the Lonely Day was created by her father, Francis Pesek from Detroit, Michigan. She told us that he "was a quiet, kind, wonderful man who had a heart of gold. He got the idea as a way of promoting kindness toward others who were lonely or forgotten as shut-ins or in nursing homes with no relatives or friends to look in on them." Francis Pesek chose this day, because it was his birthday.
Yeah, this is pretty stupid.

Fool's Paradise Day is today.
This special day seems a bit like an oxymoron. How can a fool reach, or experience, Paradise? And, how could a place BE Paradise, if fools inhabit the place? We don't know the answers to these important questions. We can only speculate, as we have yet to find the creator of this special day. We will leave the philosophical thought about this day to you the reader.
In the meantime..................
Have a wonderful Fool's Paradise Day!
Time to go hug a cow...
Cow Appreciation Day
Date When Celebrated : July 15 th
Today is Cow Appreciation Day. And, that's no bull! But, it is something to "Moo" about.
As I began my research for this day, I talked to my daughter about plans for this page. I was intending to comment in a nice way, about everything that cows give us. But, my daughter convinced me to simply talk about the dairy products.
C'mon, big guy...... give me a hug!
Our appreciation for cows can be expressed in many ways. Some websites suggest you go out and give a cow a big hug and/or a kiss. While it might sound like fun, you don't have to go to extremes to enjoy this special day. It can be as simple as pausing for a moment to to think about cows, and all that they do for us.
Now that we've had our moment of silence, it's time to celebrate. Have an ice cold glass of milk. Add chocolate syrup, if you prefer. Then, fire up the grill, and cook some burgers or a steak. And, don't forget to get your fill of cheese. Sorry, goat cheese is not allowed today.
Note: Restaurants and dairy companies celebrate this day by offering specials. Watch for them, and save.
I had spinach yesteday, though.
Fresh Spinach Day
Date When Celebrated : July 16 th
Fresh Spinach Day is our opportunity to put healthier food into our diets.
Popeye the Sailor is right. Spinach is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. It tastes good, and there are many recipes. Many people turn up their nose to it, without even trying it.
The reason for eating fresh spinach, is the nutritional value is highest, when it is fresh and uncooked.
Celebrate this day by introducing some fresh spinach to your meals today. You could start by mixing in some spinach into your garden salad. Your family may not even notice, but by doing so, you are making them healthier!
Gardeners know that spinach is easy to grow. And, it's hardy. You can plant it as soon as the ground can be worked in the spring. Why, that's today in many parts of the country! More on Growing Spinach.
There is another day that we celebrate this healthy vegetable. It's National Spinach Day, celebrated on March 26th. We think it is great that there are two days to celebrate this wonderful vegetable, and to encourage people to eat healthier.
Did You Know? V-8 Vegetable Juice is not just tomato juice. It includes 8 vegetables. One of them is Spinach.
It all adds up.
National Pig Day and Yellow Pig Day
Date When Celebrated:
National Pig Day- always March 1st
Yellow Pig Day - always July 17th
About Pig Days- -
National Pig Day recognizes and gives thanks to domesticated pigs. For some unknown reason, big, pot-bellied pigs seen in zoos, are often the symbol of the day. Pigs are clever and intelligent animals. But, most people are unaware of this high level of intelligence. They can be taught to do tricks. Some people even keep them as pets. Today is a day to give pigs the respect that they deserve.
National Pig day is celebrated by zoos, too. Activities include Snort Offs, Pig Outs, and online Pig Chats. However you choose, do not miss celebrating this day.
Yellow Pig Day is a mathematician's holiday celebrating yellow pigs (is there such a thing!?!), and the number 17. It is celebrated annually since the early 1960's, primarily on college campuses, and primarily by mathematicians. On campus, Yellow Pig Cake and Yellow Pig Carols are tradition!
If you are a mathematician, spend part of the day thinking and working in multiples of 17. And, while you do so, give a little thought to yellow pigs.
Another Pig Day? There is also some references to a "Pig Day" on January 17th. We found it in online calendars and on Ecard companies. We did not find it in any published documents. We did not find any factual evidence supporting this day on January 17th.
Color of the Day: pink, of course for Pig Day. Yellow, for Yellow Pig Day.
Origin of National Pig Day and Yellow Pig Day:
Ellen Stanley, a Texas art teacher created National Pig Day in 1972. Her intent was to to recognize and be thankful for pigs as intelligent domestic animals.
There is no evidence to suggest that this is truly a "National" day, which requires an act of congress.
The Yellow Pig was the brainstorm of mathematicians Michael Spivak and David C. Kelly in the early 1960's. They were students at Princeton University, studying mathematics. History was made as they were listing interesting properties of the number 17 (can you imagine the interesting properties!?). During this thought wave, the yellow pig was born. Most likely, it had 17 toes, 17 teeth, 17 eyelashes, etc. The yellow pig and the number 17 have been linked ever since.
I'c rather ride my bike.
Ugly Truck Day
Date When Celebrated: Always July 20
Beyond a doubt, Ugly Truck Day is a "guy thing". Every guy can appreciate the importance of this day. Not to be left out, a fair number of the ladies appreciate (their) ugly truck, too! Ugly trucks are loved and cherished by their owners.
Pick-Up Truck Trivia: Do you know the most popular state for pick-up trucks? If you guessed Texas, you are right!
Sure, a brand new, shiny truck with all of the gadgets and features still working, is a great thing. But, an old, ugly truck is something to cherish with pride. It has character that a new truck sorely lacks. It has a long history of dents, bangs, and scratches, each with their own tale of how it was proudly earned. Most guys can tell you exactly how and where every dent and scratch occurred, making your ugly truck a walking history book.
On Ugly Truck Day, go out and take a drive around with a big, broad smile on your face. You can, and should, hold an Ugly Truck contest today. But, whatever you do, don't wash or wax your truck today!
So cheesy!
Ratcatcher's Day
Date When Celebrated : July 22
Ratcatcher's Day commemorates the Pied Piper of Hamelin, the most infamous of Rat catchers.
One of the most well known German folklores is the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The town of Hamelin, Germany was infested by rats. The mayor promised to handsomely pay the Pied Piper, if he rid the town of rats. The Pied Piper played his flute. Lured by the magical music, all of the rats left town, and followed him. He played his music all the way down to the river. He waded into the river. The rats followed him and drowned. The mayor refused to pay him. So, one night when the townspeople were asleep, the Pied Piper played his music again. This time, the children of the town followed him all the way into a cave. Some versions for the legend vary here. In one version, th e Pied Piper kept them there until he was paid by the town for his services. In most versions, the children were never to be seen again.
How many Rats were lured to the River? Estimates are upwards of a million!
If you see a Ratcatcher today, wish them Happy Ratcatcher's Day!
The Origin of Ratcatcher's Day:
We have yet to discover why July 22 was selected as the date for Ratcatcher's Day.
According to the legend, the Pied Piper rid the town of Hamelin, Germany of rats on or around June 26, 1284. After the town mayor refused to make payment as promised, the Pied Piper returned to lure the children to a cave. In some versions of the legend, this occurred the next night. In others, he returned several weeks later. We speculate that "several weeks later" was July 22and.
Its a real sausage party!

How many Hot Dogs do we eat?
We consume so many hot dogs, in so many venues, that the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council hesitates to forecast consumption. But, it does report that each year we buy over 837 million packages of hot dogs at retail outlets, and over 24 million hot dogs at baseball stadiums alone.
The Origin of National Hot Dog Day:
Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day.
We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a "National" day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.
But, we firmly believe that there should be a national day for America's Hot Dog!
