What we know about that ring blast is that...

1. Goku was surprised attack by it and...
2. That ring is UBER to hurt someone like Goku who endured eneverythung Frieza threw at him beforehand.

They made it clear as day why Goku was almost killed. Goku let his guard completely down. Whis even warned him of this.

Both examples had the same context - Goku relaxed/not bracing for an attack and taken by surprise. Also, both were non-canon; one being a movie, another filler.

Whis explained Goku weakness during the beginning of the movie. In a fight, with Goku defenses up, that laser would've bounced off of him. He's too caring. We are talking about DBZ characters here. Beings that can make their durability go from tanking attacks from Cell to being killed by a human. They can decrease their power all the way down to 0 if they had too (remember the scene with Goku vs the Ginyu force? His power level was at 5 and he was boosting it up during each attack from 5 to the 100's of thousands).

He mixed the scene up with Trunks vs Freeza's goons. He went from 5 to being able to clear them out in an instant.

No.

He was at 5 thousand I believe. And then something along the lines of him boosting his power level to normal so quickly the scanners couldn't detect it happened. But I'm pretty sure it never went beyond 100k without the kaioken.
