The only good comedy that De Niro ever did was Midnight Run, Heat was a huge disappointment and Casino was only a pale shadow of Goodfellas. Considering Once Upon A Time In America, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Godfather 2 and all of the other truly great movies that he has done, how can anybody say that De Niro hasn't lost his edge in the last few years. I believe he turned down the Bill The Butcher role in The Gangs Of New York because he couldn't commit himself to the role, now, is that the same guy who put on 60 pounds to play Jake La Motta?
Heat (designer suits and stubble) was directed by Michael Mann, who also directed Miami Vice (designer suits and stubble) and Manhunter (designer suits and stubble). It must have come as some disappointment to De Niro and Pacino fans who have waited since Godfather 2, to see the two finest actors of their generation star in a movie with dialogue like "i have to sleep with frank to get closure with you". Are there any genuine fans out there old enough to remember when a new De Niro movie was an event worth waiting for?
Correct. I agree with you, but you are referring to movies that De Niro made some time ago. Since then he has been too busy with Tribecca (his production company) to concentrate on roles in the way that you outlined with the mission, which goes back to my original question - has de niro lost his edge? With regards to Great Expectations, great performance-poor movie.
Robert DeNiro has cancer
Academy Award winner Robert De Niro, 60, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but his prospects for a full recovery are good.
"Doctors say the condition was detected at an early stage because of regular checkups," his publicist said. "Because of the early detection and his excellent physical condition, doctors project a full recovery."
De Niro won an Oscar as best actor in 1981 for Raging Bull, and was named best supporting actor in 1975 for his role in The Godfather: Part II.
It is uncertain how this news will affect the shooting of his latest film Hide and Seek, in which De Niro stars opposite Famke Janssen and Dakota Fanning. The thriller was filming in New York.
