That was pretty much a given, considering the smaller engine is shared with the Audi line and if they had the software to make the larger displacement engine(s) run clean/correctly, they could had adapted it to the smaller one.

These engines (at least the 2liter) are also used in a few SEAT, Skoda and Jeep vehicles, though I think the Jeep with the VW group diesel might be a Chinese export only and the Chinese don't care about smog.
