I've read Apple has a habit of slowing down their older phones every update. You'll have to eventually upgrade your 5S to a 6/6s when iOS 10 comes out.

Well it's not on purpose, but newer, more complicated versions of OSs can run slower on older hardware (it's not always true, sometimes an update actually improves speed on a device a generation back or so).

And you can of course choose not to upgrade.

Tbh I find the Android alternative much worse, i.e. not giving updates at all, exposing the phones to vast security risks.

I feel left out because my cellphone is old. I got it back in 2008 and have had the same phone ever since:

It at least has an mp3 player and I have 400 songs.

Are you considering an upgrade?

I got an upgrade for my Sony Ericson (or whatever) K800i late last year or the year before then or something, major disappointment. Flashy shit for those that can afford it. If you like snapchat and 4G then cool, but if you like a phone to make calls, send texts, play mp3s and maybe takes pics, stick with what you have, man.

If you want a phone that takes good pictures you should probably get a more recent one. Admittedly calls and texts are the least interesting aspects of modern phones (really "phones" is a misnomer nowadays, they are mobile computers that happen to make phone calls).

Oh man it is a lot better, much faster in every way. You'll definitely notice the upgrade. At the time I didn't think having a bigger screen would be a big deal, but it's really awesome, I couldn't go back to the smaller screen now. Except for that, the camera is also considerably better, I don't know if you care about that.

Maybe I will get a new one, T-Mobile is offering some sick deals.

Lol perhaps when the phone finally stops working. I don't really need an upgrade since I just use it for calls and the mp3 player. I don't even use it for texts, if I need to text a persons phone I just message them from Aim.

Cool, you should update us if you get one on how you like it.

Do you not think you'd like the advantages that modern smartphones have?

I don't know, I guess you can't miss what you've never had..though I'm sure I'd like the extra features. If I got offered a new phone for free I'd take it.

Yeah, that makes sense.

I guess I've always been really into mobile computing, and I definitely would not want to miss a smartphone nowadays, I do so much on it.

See the "maybe"? I did. But then, I wrote it.

But yeah, miniature computer is a better way of addressing them. Ultimately though, they're just toys for the privileged, aren't they?

samsung smartphone is best smartphone.

No, not really at all. They reach further than any other consumer device ever has. They connect people in rural Africa, in India, all over the world to the Internet for the first time.

Praise the corporations for setting the black man free! Eh, I don't know, though – sources? I'd like to see some pretty hard evidence here, 'cause it sounds like you're saying that smart phones are literally saving the world right now.

Well, that's cause they are, they are literally saving lives, and changing the world and have been for the last 8 years. Where have you been?

Going away from Africa (although the stark difference between no connectivity at all and now some because of smartphones is stark there) there have been multiple stories about how Syrian refugees have been using smartphones to make their way through Europe and to make sure they survive:

Then there's the stories about protesters using smartphones and social networks like twitter and firechat to coordinate and work on real change:

Or take the US, where much more police violence is captured on the ubiquitous smartphone cameras than ever before.

I mean, you really couldn't be more wrong about this.

good job compiling evidence for your case. i just hope you're not going to try to spin this into an apple exclusive thing.

By no means, most of the benefit in impoverished areas is down to Android phones. They deserve a lot of credit.
