Well, from their perspective, going full SJW isn't actually a bad move. Don't have to worry about the "get woke, go broke" thing if you are getting cancelled anyway. So, go out on a season that the critics will likely eat up but the majority of the audience won't miss once it is gone.
Of course, this is still speculation regarding the tone. It might also be a case of people jumping to conclusion because of the manner in which the main villain is being described in interviews.

I look forward to the SJW meltdowns over this. The villains in these Marvel shows are rarely just the 100% evil cackling villains. You KNOW if this christian fundamentalist is made the slightest bit sympathetic people are gonna freak.
Perhaps it will be something similar to SJW's getting pissy cuz Far Cry 5 didn't depict the Republicans as utter monsters(yes that happened lol)

Well, that's why I am not so sure how much of this is people getting worked up over nothing, and how much is legit. Because, barring a few stinkers like Diamondback, Netflix Marvel villains are very rarely purely evil. They usually have a degree of complexity and nuance to them.
And let's be real. It would hardly be the first white, Christian male to be a villain on a tv show or movie. It's just that people are hyper aware of these things nowadays, and quick to fly into outrage if a character they identify with or who might represent them in some way is portrayed in a negative light.
FFS, Surt. Give it a rest. Besides, it's usually the Christian Fundamentalist who freak out over Christian/Biblical characters on TV/film who do not fit their preconceptions.
Remember when Lucifer was named as a show and Christians freaked out because Satan wasn't written as the Satan of their dreams/nightmares.
An article about it I read a few months back said the exact opposite, so who knows.
Looks like they are going more for creep factor than all out psycho though:
Even if the villain is a Christian fundamentalist, I really dont see the issue. Im against shooting people but dont have an issue with The Punisher being the main protagonist. They were even promoting having a gun for self defence in the last season.
Whats important is how it fits into the narrative and not forcing one view down our throats and letting politics take over. Like Supergirl, where I actually agree with the general message they preach, but still it is just too preachy.
Also Daredevil was Christian and his Mum was that bad ass Nun last season so... like.... doesnt matter.

Yes and it's SJW's who freak out when conservatives aren't portrayed as utter monsters.

I doubt the villain will be a problem. If anything it will be a small but loud minority of people complaining. The kind of people who act like someone tied them to a chair and forced them to watch the entire series.
Fu#k! The new Trailer is pretty damn good.
Maybe it helps that I'm a big Alice in Chains fan..
