What consequences do you think will come of this?

That's a good question. Because, I mean, they already barely trade with anyone, and we don't actually want them to collapse (because it would be a gigantic expensive mess which neither SK nor China wants), so the normal response of 'heavy international sanctions' is a tough one.

Should the United States install a missile defense system in South Korea and/or Japan, as is being proposed?

I could see it, but is missile defense effective yet...? Well, I guess they wouldn't be able to overwhelm it with numbers unlike a major power.

NK's biggest threat will remain their artillery in any case.

Well they launched it😂

The reason he isn't dead yet is because Obama's a pussy.

I'll note that GWBush didn't do any assassinating there either. Or Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan.... a whole line of not-assassinating the leaders of North Korea, even though the last one was no better than the current.

Keep in mind, our allies in the area don't *want* the country falling apart. If we suggested it, South Korea would shoot the suggestion down.

Because if we did, who knows how the military would react? They've got hundreds of pieces pointed at Seoul, so they can do a ton of damage if they freaked out.

Also, consider for a second the CIA's assassination record on Fidel Castro.....

We should just invade North Korea now, China doesnt have the economic stability to do anything about it. South Korea can then just colonize it afterwards.

South Korea doesn't want to! It'd cost so much it'd bankrupt them for decades. North Korea is so behind in infrastructure and technology that even if it was taken over without damage somehow, it'd drag the South Korean economy down something fierce for a long long time to come.

And frankly, I'm pretty sure China trusts SK more than NK at this point. When/if something does go down with NK, it'd probably be better to have them involved.

That's one of the issue with North Korea. If they became sane and stable tomorrow, it'd still take decades before a reunification became an economically reasonable idea.

I think our missile defense technology would be pretty effective shooting down any nuclear missiles North Korea fired towards South Korea or Japan, given that our tech is still substantially better than theirs. That, and like you said, they likely wouldn't be able to overwhelm the defense system because they only have a limited amount of nukes.

Yeah the North Korean populace is all basically dead inside anyway, so there's no real loss destroying and razing their entire country.

😂

Well communism/socialism will do that to people.

Of note, the North Korean system has drifted away from communism for quite some time, and especially with the fall of the USSR as allies and tensions with China cooling after they dared make peace with the west, don't put much value on that angle.

Not that what they are is any better, and arguably worse than old-school communism- Wikipedia- NK's political ideology

Some foreign observers have instead described North Korea's political system as an absolute monarchy[92][93][94] or a "hereditary dictatorship".[95] Others view its ideology as a racialist-focused nationalism similar to that of Shōwa Japan,[96][97][98][99] or bearing a resemblance to European fascism.[100]

The North Korean government exercises control over many aspects of the nation's culture, and this control is used to perpetuate a cult of personality surrounding Kim Il-sung,[102] and, to a lesser extent, Kim Jong-il.[103] While visiting North Korea in 1979, journalist Bradley Martin noted that nearly all music, art, and sculpture that he observed glorified "Great Leader" Kim Il-sung, whose personality cult was then being extended to his son, "Dear Leader" Kim Jong-il.[104]

It's.... interesting to say the least.

HEY, KIM JONG UN, NORTH KOREA SUCKS, AND YOU'RE A *****!

Now, eventually he'll see this and launch another one.

But I'll be ready.

Sounds horrible.

Imagine all those people and they don't even know any better.

Our safety comes first and while this crazy ******* is in power, anything could happen. If we piss him off one day, we could end up exchanging nukes.

We could literally wipe out all of NK with a single missile, so its not like we wouldn't crush them though. But its still the thought of it.

Wut? We have no weapons that powerful.

I don't think we know or will ever know the true power of what weapons we have.

We wouldn't need a missle defense system because if N. Korea fired a single rocket into America we would wipe their entire country off the face of the Earth, and they know it.

Interesting. I guess us Canadians slowly have our souls drained in order to pay for our healthcare and power the great maple syrup factories.

As your population grows it will cost more and more so I suppose you are correct.

Would we really nuke them back? (Assuming you were referring to a counter-nuclear strike when you said "we would wipe their entire country off the face of the Earth"😉. I feel like that would cause more harm than good in the long run with all the radiation circulating to South Korea, Japan, and China - and eventually the U.S.

As the population grows, so will the tax revenue.

Yea, it's this weird bizarro world almost. It's not a jack-boot police state, it's a propaganda state.

And their view of the South is decadent, unhappy people who live using material goods to deal with the emptiness of their lives when they'd be much happier up in North Korea.

Here's a video if anyone's interested. Optional stuff, doesn't directly pertain to missile defense or the military situation (other than trying to figure out what they're likely to do which does matter some), but this guy, who lived in South Korea, has done a lot of research on them over the years and talks a lot about what they actually believe. It has a lot to do with the Japanese occupation and the party lines of national pride of the time- and how the early regime used some of those people who adjusted their old tactics to serve the new ruling party lines back in the early days.

It's long, but cool.

Uh, any missiles that could wipe out NK would cause significant damage to SK and China, and probably hurt Japan and others with fallout!

I think missile defense is the more sensible option. Also, they probably are more likely to fire at the South than us.

Look at how apeshit America got over 9/11 and Pearl Harbour, events in which "only" a couple thousand people died.

If a nuclear weapon actually detonated in an American city, America would lose its ****ing mind and annihilate North Korea. Hell, they probably wouldn't even need nukes to do it, America has enough conventional ordinance to completely destroy all of North Korea's infrastructure.
