I honestly think everyone in that courthouse knew it was a ridiculous defense. I don't think even Couch and his parents bought into it.
He had/has a crafty lawyer who secured a psychologist to testify (ie paid him well) and invent "affluenza". The Judge for some reason accepted it, which is odd as it was brought up that years and years before, she had sentenced a [financially poor] teen who killed one person while driving drunk to 20 years in prison.
Boyd sentenced Miller, a troubled teen whose mother was a drug addict and who was being raised by his grandfather, to 20 years behind bars."The court is aware you had a sad childhood, but you are fortunate to have a grandfather who is so committed and loves you," Boyd told Miller during the sentencing. "… I hope you will take advantage of the services [offered by the Texas Youth Commission] and turn your life around."
