Every film in Phase I was a gamble. Besides IM2 they never did a film that was a guaranteed hit until Post-Avengers. Before then they had no idea how audiences would react to Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. In fact TIH didn't make much money. That could have happened to all of them.And putting them all together was a massive gamble (in those days, nowadays everyone knows it's a proven formula thanks to Marvel).

No, it wasn't. Only fanboys went nuts over it but in the end it besmirched Vader more than anything else. It took away from his mystique, his competence, and he had some cringe worthy lines.
