I loved Thanos well before he became the smash hit villain the general public embraced due to the quality of the MCU and the films.
Justice league underperformed because it was a rushed hacked job only the fanboys were raving about. Dc lost the trust of the dceu with their previous films despite WWs success and her involvement in the film it still was not enough to save it.
To be the box office king you have to win the general public who has no preference outside of an enjoyable film. I love what I enjoy since I am extremely open minded. I hated trek before Abrams. Star Wars was good but nothing that drove me until Disney. I enjoyed solo and it tanked so based off your theory I should despise the film. I still say it was a terrible idea to center a film around but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
