Urm no it's not made anything close to that kind of profit. You actually hit the nail on the head here:
So marketing usually at least half of a films budget (assuming WB wasn't thinking this will be flopping).
So it had a budget of $100mill as per boxofficemojo. Half is $50mill. Total cost there is $150mill.
Double that to make up for the cut taken by theatres (which is included in total gross, which is why your $146mill profit was ways off), and you are looking at a minimum of $300mill to break even.
If however the marketing costs was closer to $100mill, then the break even point would be $400mill. I personally doubt the marketing was that high, but it is quite normal for superhero movies to spend as much on marketing as they did on the budget.
All that said the break even point for this film could range anywhere from the $300mill-$400mill marks.
Although personally I feel it would be well in the profit range if it got to the $400mill mark, as I doubt they spent $100mill marketing this.
Oh I understand it fairly well. Things like theatre cuts vary from country to country, so it's hard to gauge an exact break even point, but doubling the total cost (budget + marketing) is usually a good estimate.
That said this might have made a tiny profit, and add that to the good reviews, may have justified a sequel. That said, it's only justified another small budget sequel. There was no breakout box office here like Venom or Deadpool.
I don't think you read my link or my posts very well. I talked about movie take vs. revenue reported and movie theater stuff.
This site also suggests it needs to make $200 million to break even:
https://screenrant.com/shazam-movie-budget-cost/
Every place I look, production cost + marketing PR cost = 2*production cost.
Nothing indicates that this movie spent a ton of marketing money relative to its production budget and other films.
It's break even point is $200 million unless you can provide a citation that contradicts everything else I've posted.
Also, if this movie barely broke even after making $340 million, that's a massive problem and it would be one of the most poorly budgeted movies of all time.
^ Jeez Dude even Golgo knows it took massively more than $200mill to break even. Close to $300mill according to Golgos source. (Cant remember if it was variety or Forbes now).
Doubling the budget would work if it made all of its money domestically where theatres only take around a third of box office. But they take more internationally, and take a lot more in China.
So how much its domestically to international ratio is also important. But a Prudent rule of thumb is to double the Production + Marketing cost. You cant just double production cost and ignore marketing, especially not with superhero films, which are well known for spending an excessive amount on marketing.

Not really. Thats a pretty low number to reach for superhero films. And after Hom entertainment sales, it will make some profit, even if it barely breaks even at the box office.
Any profit (especially with great reviews), justifies a sequel.

If it was successful enough to get a sequel, then that's successful enough for me. I really enjoyed it, and look forward to what comes next.
I was hoping for a bigger hit, so they could spend more money on a sequel. This sequel will Likely also have a small budget now.

👆BTW, nobody will really know how much profit this will make, especially after the merchandise and home video sales.
Phsyical media sales are going down every year with digital being the next big thing.

Just depends on the movie. Most movies don't do as well as you pointed out. Something like Man of Steel made a bucket load of profit off of DVD/Blue Ray sales.

So their going to put Mr Mind and Dr Savina's plans on the back burner until the 3rd sequel then?
No idea. They will probably go ahead with another low budget sequel, then increase the budget if The Rock ever comes along. But for now its still all talk.

We've been hearing about this "Black Adam" movie for quite some time. I kinda lost interest in it honestly.
Yeah same.
Even NOW, theyve said nothing official on when BA starts. I think if Shazam made more money, it could have pushed that along faster.
