12 Latinos Fired - Attended Immigrant Protest and Missed 1 Day of Work

Title says it all.

They missed work to join friends in protest/free speech on the "Day Without Immigrants."

Manager texted at least some and said, "You and your family are fired. I hope you enjoyed your day off, and you can enjoy many more. Love you.”

They had a zero tolerance policy. I've worked places where a no-call no-show was an immediate termination and usually it is at a job where shift work is important.

So was the manager wrong for firing all 12 of the protesters or should leniency have been given?

Actions have consequences.

If the company had a zero tolerance policy, then these 12 shouldn't be shocked over getting zero tolerance. Sure, you could say it's wrong to have a zero tolerance policy in the first place, but the fact of the matter is that they're not that uncommon. Not really news.

Here is how it should have played out:

"Boss, we, the 12 of us, want to attend a march for Latinos and want to miss a day of work. Is that okay?"

"No. We cannot be without that many people in a single day. Sorry."

"Okay. Thought we'd try. See you tomorrow."

"No problem. Thanks for asking. I appreciate attentive employees like you. Glad you're on the team."

Here is how it played out:

*attends protest without notice to the boss*

*Boss shits himself because 12 people are missing throughout the day*

*they come back and the boss informs them that they are all fired*

Seems rather obvious that they should have been responsible adults and just ASKED before they didn't show up to work. 😬

This will work out for the boss. Plenty more illegals out there that he can hire.

He was right to do so. I also like how some are calling this unfair. It's unfair to fire someone for skipping work to go to some rally?

Also, why didn't they hold this "day without immigrants" on a Friday or Saturday? THOSE are the busiest nights, the nights when people want to go out on the town, etc. People would have felt the effects of this more if it was on a different day. I guess a lot don't work on Saturday so that might defeat the purpose, but a Friday night? That would have much more of an effect.

The funny thing is this isn't just an isolated incident:

After 18 employees skip work to attend immigration rally, they receive brutal lesson from their boss

This protest, overall, accomplished nothing and it even made the lives of some legal immigrants even worse. Was that...the intent? If so, mission accomplished guys, pat yourselves on the back for a job well done 👆

21 People Fired After Taking Part In Immigration Protest

My gosh, so you found two other cases where the same exact scenario played out?

I will say that this behavior does not match the work ethics of any of the Latinos that I personally know. Every last one of them is responsible and hard-working. They would never do something so stupid as to compromise their ability to make money for their family.

These individuals probably represent a small percentage of a small percentage of our Latino working class. My goal was not to call out Latinos as being lazy and stupid, it was the call out the stupid self-destructive social justice warrior idiocy.

If anyone uses this thread to express racism, f*ck you. 😉

Nobody's using this thread to express racism, we're using it to express gratitude that employers aren't putting up with this social justice bullshit.

Obviously this doesn't represent all mexicans, cancerous feminism doesn't represent all women, the KKK doesn't represent all white people, and BLM doesn't represent all black people.

The point of being anti-SJW is that we're against this marxist bullshit where people try and classify everyone by their demographic to argue institutional bullshit, an oppressor class and thus collective guilt, and an oppressed class and thus collective innocence.

Yes I did.

Well yeah, and what were they even protesting over? Nobody is really against legal immigration.

Nobody said all Latinos are stupid or lazy. In fact, the "lazy" insult, if used by anyone..would actually make no sense. They didn't take off work just to stay home, which is what a lazy person would have done.

These specific people are indeed stupid, they should have asked their bosses if they could have the day off and if he said no then they should have come to work. But it doesn't say anything about Latinos as a whole. I know plenty who went to work and kept businesses open. In fact, some of them did very very well that day because they got more customers than usual due to other places being closed.

One thing that does bother me is some of the people who were fired and spoke to the press did not know a single word of english. They could only speak in Spanish and a translator was required. They are so proud of being immigrants and yet refuse to even assimilate.

This is clearly a case of miscommunication, and the fault of the former employees.

If you are going to attend a protest you have to get in contact with your employer and explain it to him so he can get a hold of replacements.

#Racism

You mean you actually have to go to work and perform your required duties to maintain gainful employment else you'll be fired?!?!

Who knew?!?!

dur

Non citizens acting as if they have greater rights than afforded to citizens.

Since we are welcome to illegally move to their countries and pubicly protest thier governments treatment of us as law breakers, without fear of action by said governments, we should allow them the the same. Why else would they think it is acceptable here?

So already some in the media are spewing lies about what has happened:

‘Day Without Immigrants’ Protests Result In Over 100 Terminations

From the article:

"When the “Day Without Immigrants” protests transpired last week, over one hundred employees were fired for participating in their “right to peaceably assemble” per the Constitution."

They were fired for not showing up at work when they were scheduled to be there, not for protesting.

Just a shame that the first amendment, as it applies in most cases, has to do with the government censoring and not your employer.

When will idiots remember that the amendments have to do with the rights of the individual as they pertain to the government?

Did they stop to think for just a tiny moment that the first amendment is not "the right to retain your job"?

No, the first amendment is the right to speak freely about your government.

Yeah, and for some of these instances the people just didn't show up or call in advance to say they wouldn't be coming in. So they whine about unfair treatment, but what about the employer that has been supporting them(immigrants) for years by employing them? When you shit even on the people who have helped you out you do not deserve to be taken seriously.

Especially some place like a restaurant..if a dozen or more employees just no show without any notice..that f*cks them over. Not only that, it screws over the other employees who did show up. If you're a server there and the cooks don't show up..well, you have nothing to really serve, no job to do.

This entire thing just wasn't very well thought out. All they ended up doing was showing everyone how truly replaceable they were. I have to assume they intended for the exact opposite to occur.

Don't see anything wrong with it. If I didn't show up for a day, I would be in jail. They just lost their jobs. 12 employees all skipping out could be a real problem for some business owners.
