They defend him because they see no other option. Recently a article was published (I can find the exact name if your interested) that stated that people under stress or some form of crisis are more likely to vote for a "Strong Man". I think that is part of the reason why Trumpers will defend Trump and has stood by him his entire campaign regardless of what scandal surrounded him. They don't care about politics or "normal behaviour". They only care about the man and his projection of being a Strong Man with the power to by himself fix their perceived problems.
