I think maybe it (GoTG) worked because the writers managed to get in at -least- one scene for each character to humanize them, either visually, via dialogue, or both. Rocket’s scars, Drax’s family, Gamora’s planet, and how hated she was in the prison…This movie didn’t really do that, or didn’t do it very well at any rate.
We got to see Atom Smasher’s uncle (the Fonz).
Cyclone mentioned being kidnapped by a villain.
Hawkman and Fate alluded to a long friendship.All those things fell flat for me though.
The closest for me was Fate talking about his long life, and that worked mostly because of Pierce Brosnan’s delivery.
Yup, and the humor.
Most of the humor in Black Adam didn't land for me. Pretty generic.
GotG is a freaky anomaly. It shouldn't have worked and looked like a totally flop from the trailers. But it had the James Gunn touch.
