Using the word bigot or racist to describe things that aren't either is a clear way of diminishing the terms themselves. Using humor to pretend it's all in good faith when it isn't, bringing up sensible topics to rile up people (either by baiting them into saying racist things or into getting defensive against racist remarks) is certainly something akin to the former.
