An obvious one is gun control laws. That one was started by skittish politicians who were terrified of an armed black uprising. That's the origin of gun control: Racism.
I posted a comment about insider trading laws, from a chinese banker, who claimed politicians get a pass because the laws were never intended to protect consumers, but to protect banks from cheating on each other.
And it goes on like this. The implication is no one really cares about the general public. Even organizations designed to protect the general public, which all end up working for the people they're supposed to be watching (They call the term "regulatory capture".)

Prohibition was shady too. Watching a documentary about it some of the people pushing for it got people on their side by more or less making it seem like only hard liquor would be prohibited and beer and wine would still be allowed. Then of course it turned out not to be true.
Also it bothers me that the government encouraged regulatory measures to add lethal chemicals to industrial alcohol.
