Lot of talk of Chinese hate now. Conveniently. While I have no doubt there will be violence against Chinese now, as there has always been, and always will be, its hard to ignore the fact many other ethnic/racial people get attacks every day, and never get reports in the news.
It is always, always, a representative of a country the US has business relations with that gets the reports, or the anti-hate slogans. Same with Muslim hate, that happened when we had a lot of money mixed up with Saudi's, Iran, big Oil to worry about.. So suddenly it was all about Islamophobes.
Look, I'm not saying bury anti Asian hate. I'm saying show me some concern for people that don't represent a serious political or financial concern. Show me the caring, without the self interest.
Never happens.
It actually seems to be about people of East Asian descent in general and not just Chinese people. Korean Americans, Japanese Americans, etc. And tbh violence and hate against Asian Americans is usually vastly downplayed compared to some other demographics so it's good for it to be spoken about regardless of any other concerns.
Asian Americans get violence directed at them from parts of the American population AND are frequently systemically targeted by various institutions (for example being penalised in the education system for doing too well).
If this wave of concern can be harnessed by responsible parties then some good could come of it and awareness can be raised. Helping one demographic doesn't immediately exclude all others. It's a holistic process of making life better for everyone by working brick-by-brick.
