Obviously those on the coasts aren't all that aware of the issues otherwise they wouldn't hav been shocked by Hillary's loss. That's the whole reason we have an electoral college, it keeps California and New York from simply ruling over people who have other things to worry about than gender politics.

I'm fine with disbanding the electoral college, but I would also say that assuming the popular vote would've turned out the same way as it did if those were the rules is a mistake.

People vote/not vote based on whether their state is a swing state, many times. Smart people in solid red/blue states often don't see much of a point in voting. Also, the candidates campaign differently based on the electoral college. More populated states would get a lot more attention by both candidates if that system were in place. So nobody actually knows who would've won the popular vote, if the electoral college had not been in place.
