of course, madredeus is awsome, very good choice.
I love Tool, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits, Guns N´Roses, Sigur Rós, Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack, Tricky, Mão Morta, dEUS, Primitive Reason, At the Drive in, The Mars Volta, A Perfect Circle, Placebo, Muse, Godspeed you Black Emperor!, Dead Can Dance, Queen, Queens of the Stone Age.
This is hard there are so many bands i like, i can´t choose.
The Beatles--
All you really have to do is listen to Abbey Road to appreciate their brilliance; tracks 9-16 (The Long Medley) have more greatness than most bands have in an entire career.
Then when you look at Sgt. Peppers, RUbber Soul, Revolver...they put out at least 4 of the 10 greatest albums of all time in a seven year span. Add the social impact that has not yet been equalled and you have the first band that truly transcended music (Elvis wasn't a band folks).
Look at the songwriting duo of Lennon-McCartney; when they work together (Abbey Road) they are just brilliant, but even when they are alone (The White Album), they still show that they can stand alone as song writers. Just think of all the great songs that The Beatles had.. Yesterday, A Hard Day's Night, A Day In The Life, the list goes on. And if you look at those three songs that I mentioned, none of them really sound similar to eachother. They didn't just stay with the same formula but just evolved.
I didn't even mention George Harrison, but my fingers grow weary.
Múm
Because they are Icelandic, they record in a lighthouse, they use accordions, cellos & melodicas over a backdrop of weird electronic pops and crackles and "real sound" samples arranged into a spasmodic beat.
Because the songs are like dreams and the singers are twin sisters singing in tandem with very similar voices that hover between child-like and not-human.
Because they give me goosebumps.
