we have to do a lot of assuming on the film's behalf in order to imagine those drones as being purely servo operated, especially considering their function in assisting operators in spotting worms

right, but we have very little to describe exactly what it is in the novel. in fact that's all we gave to go on, exactly the way you just described it there, and nothing more. (except that it's actually suggested as being way tinier than even this version). more to the point, there was obviously no video feed being returned to the operator, or there'd have been no muad'dib. i was just hoping that things would be suspiciously low-tech enough to at least nod to the butlarian jihad. those old-style console switches in the ornithopters were a plus, but there weren't many plusses. the whole thing looked suspiciously computerized
