Fetils giz, what a pile of rubbish! Emasculated indeed, surprised they didn't say "FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC".

isn't that the Bible. Let was always a loving father. His kindness, is why Jessica gave him a son in the book.

Hadn't noticed that... another reason for me to feel less impressed by it. I am tallying them up. It's funny, your taste in books and presents taste in comic characters and all those years I trolled him and we trolled each other. It's amusing in hindsight.

Read about the jihad thing last night after watching the movie.

Was that mentioned in the first book, or a later books development?

Been a long time since I read the first one, all I really remember is feeling bad for Paul and his wife because both were forced into a loveless marriage and life they never wanted.

And never read any other Dune books.

First books onwards expanded in the shit extended Universe created by his son. Which is sadly canon.

Been awhile since I read the book, but I don't remember it that way.

They live in a harsh environment, that's more conducive to "Klingon kinship" then Betazoid touchy-feely kinship.

Plus the stakes being as high as they are, I can't imagine him not answering the call being tolerated at all, much less with a "do as you will" permissiveness. I mean, we're talking about the future of an entire people here, refusing that would be the height of selfishness.

Okay, I'm remembering the film, not the book here, but iirc they have that conversation before they leave for Arrakis. They're on Caladan, which looks like a pretty lush world.

Again in the film, I don't think the Duke truly knew how ****ed everything was going to be until after they arrived, so I think it's forgivable.

I didn't mean his look.

Meant his repulsive sexual deviations.

Hollywood and their political correctness, smh.

I didn't mean just appearance, either, although that's part of it. He is a bit more physically imposing and not just a fat body like Lynch's version. Lynch's is entertainingly over the top, but doesn't necessarily scream competence. This one is more menacing and seemingly powerful.

But we haven't really learned much about him yet anyway. I doubt much of that will be explicit, but it may be implied in Part 2. Villeneuve may choose to keep some of that stuff more mysterious, though. Who knows. Will be interesting to see what he does. The PG-13 rating may limit what he can do, but sometimes keeping things in the imagination can make him seem worse.

From my perspective, the film adequately portrayed Harkonnen as a gluttonous, evil, and power-hungry ruler, who is prepared to betray/kill anyone who stands in his path.

It would be nice to see a bit more of Harkonnen's backstory fleshed-out, I suppose, but I don't really need his deviant sexual proclivities spelled out for me on-screen, personally.

Via radio transmission and electric motors. Think of an RC plane, but more advanced.

The Butlerian Jihad hasn't been mentioned though, I suspect they won't in the second film.

i'm assuming they were drones. those tiny round aircraft which were zipping all over the place looking for sandworms.

and what is receiving and translating those signals into movement of whatever gears or motors or servos.

Servos taking in the radio signals. Like an RC plane, or at least an older one. The new RC planes might have microchips in them, I really don't know. But radio signals and servocs still work.

From your own link:

In Herbert’s novel, it is implied that the Baron is a sexual predator with a preference for young boys, a trait that was highlighted in Lynch’s film. Villeneuve and his co-writers, Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth, jettisoned that aspect of the character entirely. “I felt this idea was a bit clichéd and didn’t age well,” Villeneuve says. “It didn’t interest me.”

So while it's very likely he will play a larger role in Part Two, I doubt anything truly disturbing will be revealed or even hinted about him.

Then again, time will show.

Oh, right. Sorry, forgot about that. I read the article probably a week ago.

So there you go.

is transmitted binary code not required for radio controlled servos?

AM, FM and PM do have binary data in them iirc, but there's no microprocessor needed on the other end if it's a simple servo performing what amounts to an on/off action. An RC car or plane is just series of servos activating electric motors, triggered by radio waves, at least the ones when I was a kid/teen were.

So it's feasible that the Dune-verse could have drones that to not microprocessor reliant if there's a human controller on the other end.

Isn't the Hunter-Seeker essentially that? A small flying device controlled by a person with a remote?

he raped a Bene Gesserit and the viruses they store in their cells were released disfiguring and ravaging him. Previously he had been almost perfect like Feyd, which is why he likes young men, it's all about the looks and virility he lost.

yeah, try getting the tech for a hunter killer that small without micro processors. A flaw in Herbert's original visioning my opinion.

It was written in the time when transistors were still considered apex tech. He had no idea what the future would bring.

And it's an alien race so who says their tech is comparable to ours?

I think people who have forcefields that can stop any attack above a certain speed, and cause nuclear explosions if their laser weaponry hits it can overcome the issue of microprocessors.

They're not aliens.

The humans in Dune are essentially us, just 8,000+ years in the future, their ancestors originated on our Earth.
