I disagree with him being fired, but people have been getting fired for shit they say on TV/radio or post online for years now. why are people only now getting upset.

I mostly agree, but this doesn't sound like a typical "not filtering himself as a representative" moment.

If Disney did a proper background check, they'd have known he was a provocateur before they hired him. I mean, this is akin to hiring Matt Parker or Trey Stone, setting up a film, and suddenly discovering: "Hey, did you hear about this South Park thing? We've gotta get rid of these guys!"
