The only theory I can offer is that even though the Guardians movies were not aimed at children Disney see's itself as a family friendly company as a whole. And Gunn's stuff specifically had to do with shit about little kids.

If the convicting criminal paid his debt to society I don't see why that should be any problem in any kind of job.

I would counter that with Thanos as the most powerful being in the universe with countless trillions of lives at stake...better just to put him down right away than make it so Thor can make some witty comment as he kills him.

Thor should have gone for the head or the arm. This is a fact. I like Thor and Ragnarok was one of my favorite movies, but he's a doofus at times.
