Cyclops before they turned him shit. He was nifty.My guess is that with Bendis leaving and the inevitable Fox deal, they've been trying to bring the X-Men back in to focus after basically trying to shove them in to the back of the universe for a while. The problem is that it was no small task.
Cyclops, Wolverine, Xavier and Jean were all dead at pretty much the same time (and if the X-Men have a... Quadrinity? Is that a word? it's them), and gimmicks like the Future Five and trying to shove characters like Shadowcat in to prominence just weren't working to get people on board the way they used to.
Some really bad attempts at adding new villains didn't help either.
X-Men for a while, though, even going back to the mid 00s, has basically been "let's throw every stupid idea at the wall and see what sticks", instead of say, what they do with other books where they go back to an older villain and use them as a kind of safety net for their stories.
Hickman is just another attempt to reboot things and see if that finally works, imo.
...Feel like it'd be hard for him to make it any worse at this point. /shrug
