Thor doesn't have the power to get rid of its enchantment.

And it was revealed to be far more than just Odin's magic, anyway. So it's not like he had any choice in the matter.

Rune King Thor easily had the power to do so.

And back then, Mjolnir wasn't revealed to be Mother Storm and all that. So it was just a tool --- a powerful tool, but still just a tool. Its purpose was to conduct and focus Thor's power.

Now, it's all been retconned to be much, much different.
