Thanos was relishing in destroying the people there down to the last minute. That's why Namor later attempted to betray the Cabal. Now why Thanos himself didn't destroy the planet I can't say. Maybe the antimatter bombs were an easier solution?
AND again if Tony phased the planet after Hyperion caught it, it would have destroyed Earth. The planet is larger and earth was literally encompassed in it. By keeping it out of phase and aligning it, their job was done.

Hyperion didn't catch the planet on Earth, it was still some distance from Earth.

And why didn't they had Hyperion catch the planet before it got near Earth?

um Like the plan involved, they planned on aligning the Earth with the Rogue planet, so why waste effort on catching and bringing it to Earth when its ALREADY coming for you?
Also the planet is bigger than Earth. Look where they had Hulk embed the machine on the planet be seen, as well as the rogue Planet outline
