When Trump got covid I thought it might make people more sympathetic and help his numbers a bit. But it seems the opposite had occurred.

Yes and no. If Trump wins, really depends how he wins. If it's because of his planned cheating, then no, the polls can't really account for that. eg claiming he won on election night and then suing to have states not count uncounted mail-in votes.

Because there was a concentrated effort to make it seem like every pollster had Cliton winning in landslide, which wasn't the case. Sure polls had her winning, but if they're within the margin of error, it is what it is. Polls are snapshots, not crystal balls.

1. Not true. There was no concerted effort to make it seem like every pollster had Clinton winning by a landslide - it's what the polls showed. It's the way it was with almost no pollsters showing that Trump would win, even towards the very end where LA Times and Rasmussen were the only major pollsters to get it right. Most had Clinton winning by significant margins.

2. This is also not true. The aggregate had Clinton winning by over 5 points with most MoEs being +-2.

And you’re right. The National polls were largely correct in that they had Clinton winning the popular vote overall, and national polls can’t really account for the awkward situation with the EC which allowed Trump to win. But they were wrong with a lot of swing states. Some by just a bit and some by a lot. It’s the state polling that will need to be redeemed.

But it’s more about trust. The public just doesn’t seem to trust them anymore.

I think the polls will tighten. It’s what happened in 2016. Clinton’s lead started shrinking in most polls in the weeks before the election.
