It's just a rumor, so I'd not take it too seriously for right now.

But if Trumps plans on rage-quitting right before Jan 20th and wants the newly sworn in POTUS to give him a blanket pardon for everything he's done from 2017-2021, this could be why he's looking into it, he wants someone loyal. Even though Pence is a scumbag and would absolutely give Trump a blanket pardon like Ford gave Nixon.

While what you say has merit, Trump running on his own platform would split the party enough that it would give both Trump and whomever is the Republican Candidate a loss and it would be glorious.

Also have to remember that less than half of the US citizenry voted. Not sure we can absolutely say that half of those lazy bastards are pro Trump.
