To be fair the DS crew don’t know where Ego’s weak spot is unless Vader can sense it via the force? But pretty sure they’ll aim the laser towards the centre anyway

You answered your own question. The Death Star will decimate the planet, knowing Ego's weakspot is unnecessary.
