He also said The Phantom Menace is his favorite Star Wars movie.
That does seem like crazy talk, but I admit I enjoyed it because I saw it as a kid. But some of it doesn't hold up all that well seeing so many years later.
But I still find portions of the prequel Trilogy that I enjoy. I can at least watch them and enjoy them on some level. But I can't make it through The Farce Awakens again. That stupid fucking Death Star 2.0 is just too cringe-worthy.

Should've kept Lucas around instead of kick him to the curb for the newer movies, Maybe then it be wouldn't be doing so much rehashing of the Original trilogy.

George really does love setting up people for this kind of shit lol. The kid who played Anakin in Episode 1 got relentlessly harassed too.
JJ Abrams consulted with George Lucas on the script

Good.
I assume much of it is still trying to clean up from Rian's fiasco.

No, not at all what he did in RotJ.
He threw his lightsaber down in RotJ in protest of the Emperor trying to manipulate him into the dark side with anger.
In TLJ, he chucked his lightsaber over his shoulder because he was throwing a tantrum.
Don't you dare try to be a Rian Johnson apologist.
