On point one, border defense is only one legitimate reason to use military force.
Others are defense of "interests" abroad, and defense of allies borders and interests.
Realistically, no one's ever going to invade our borders with a military force, but our livelihoods and security do not end with our borders.

I get that but Surt was comparing it to Japan attacking at Pearl Harbour. So was addressing it from that perspective.
That said, I would argue we in the West would definitely be more secure in our borders if we just left the Middle East alone (military wise).
And the fact that you pointed out its highly unlikely for anyone to invade past our own borders makes it make even less sensical to get the military involved in wars as often as we do.
