It's an incredibly shitty feeling when someone treats you as if you either don't belong here in the US or are somehow less American than they are, especially when you've lived here most, if not all, of your life.
It doesn't happen to me often. I imagine that's only because I look mean and I've got a heavy build, but I'm pretty sure it would be a much more frequent thing if I were smaller, darker, or had an accent. When it has happened to me, it has been much more indirect, like an offhand comment about my ethnic background that I was expected to laugh at and shrug off, or someone would start to unload their racist bullshit on me while not realizing that I'm Latino.
I've kept my cool each time, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if, in their minds, I was the assh*le for cutting them off and telling them why they were full of shit.
That said, f*ck Trump for his racist comments about Representatives Omar, Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib, and Pressley needing to go back to where they came from. They're as American as the rest of us.
