There is no universal standard for debating, it depends on where the debate is taking place. What's more, I don't really debate anymore so this isn't really a topic that requires me to find some working resolution to. I quit debating in large part because I got sick of trying to resolve such things. So while I understand your frustration, I can't really offer up anything to help you make everything make sense in your mind.If you want to try to get the mods to make a ruling on Thanos's speed/reflexes go right ahead, but all I've been saying here is that the rules on characters using common sense in regards to the speed they use defensively apply to Surfer as well.
I agree that Surfer would use his speed for defense in a forum fight. But what I disagree with is the double standard depending on who he's fighting. He can't, at the same time, avoid Superman's attacks, while being able to be hit by Thanos. That's a contradiction.
Surfer has been tagged by many characters moving under light speed so it's not a surprise to see him get punched in a comic by Thanos. So to say that Thanos must have FtL speed punches as the reason he struck Surfer is asinine.
And like I said, the burden of proof is on the one assigning special attributes to a character. This is the universal standard of debating and logic.
Is Thanos faster than a human? Hell yeah as he has feats to prove it. Is he fast as or faster than light? Hell no, as he has no feats to prove it.
