The thing is I can see why at first glance it would look like he was saying so.

But even that could have been a rare occurrence of him listening to advice on how bad he screwed up, and how trying to explain himself would just make things worse.
Better to fess up to trolling and move on, over explanations over whst you "really" meant.
The truth is, Trump stuck his foot in his mouth by taking up a subject he had no clue about.
That is NOT a better narrative.
But his incompetence doesn't excuse media people insisting he said something he never actually said.
