CO Hospital Denies Kidney Transplant to Anti-Vaxxer

A hospital system in Colorado says it will not perform transplant surgery for unvaccinated patients. UCHealth said it implemented the policy to protect its patients."For transplant patients who contract COVID-19, the mortality rate ranges from about 20% to more than 30%. This shows the extreme risk that COVID-19 poses to transplant recipients after their surgeries."
Studies show the COVID-19 vaccines available in the U.S. are highly-effective at preventing illness. In the U.S., 186-million people have been fully-vaccinated—56.68% of the population—according to Johns Hopkins University.
A Colorado woman will no longer be receiving a kidney transplant after she confirmed that she would not be getting the COVID-19 vaccine, violating the hospital system UCHealth's vaccination protocol. Leilani Lutali, a born-again Christian, said she objected to the use of fetal cell lines in the development of the COVID-19 vaccine. "As a Christian, I can't support anything that has to do with abortion of babies, and the sanctity of life for me is precious," Lutali said.
The Aurora, Colorado-based UCHealth said in a statement earlier this week that in "almost all situations" transplants and living donors were required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 "in addition to meeting other health requirements and receiving additional vaccinations." Dan Weaver, a spokesperson for UCHealth, explained that the studies have indicated the mortality rate for transplants who contract the virus are high.
