Just finished this and I thought it was fine but, like I expected, it's a flat out inferior version of the story compared to the game. The biggest issue is the bond between Joel and Ellie isn't nearly as well developed as the game. It felt very rushed, which leads to my nest issue: the pacing. The pacing was quite poor, especially in the final episode. It also doesn't help that there were two episodes that were superficial to the overall plot and halted all of the show's momentum, though episode 3 was probably the best of the season. And I was not happy with the almost complete lack of zombies. Heck, the infected only appear in flashbacks in the back half of the season. They almost seem more of an annoyance at this point then a threat which completely undermines the need for a cure.
I agree that the bond between Joel and Ellie wasn't nearly as well developed as the game, and that the show could have used probably one or two more episodes dedicated solely to further developing that bond.
I don't really mind the lack of infected, and I guess they could have been in it more in the second half of the season, but I thought they way they were portrayed in the first half was enough to show them as a threat.
I liked the show a lot though, and am very interested to see how they'll adapt the second game. I personally loved the second game but I know it's a very controversial and divisive game, so we'll see what they change.
Well if there's one thing I hope they include in it, it's this masterpiece
