Your narrative may be correct. If Macy's saw the surveillance video and they never ever talked to the man, that would make sense why Macy's PR team said the attack was unprovoked.

But why would they target a random stranger that just so happened to be gay? This still looks like a hate crime against gay people, to me.

Why target a random stranger at all? Because this is an Internet phenomenon popularized by sites like World Star Hip Hop in which teens film themselves assaulting an unsuspecting person and upload it to social media.

But therein lies the point: random. The sexual orientation of the victim appears to be incidental, because he happens to be gay; there is no evidence to support that he was targeted because he is gay.

Victim selection alone does not a hate crime make. Every crime against a member of a vulnerable group is not automatically a hate crime.

Actually, I think this gay dude was targeted specifically because he was gay and I have no reason to believe he wasn't targetted for any other reason than he was gay and these homophobes didn't like him. They heard him talking on the phone and wanted to hurt a gay dude. "Man is a f**. Let's play the knockout game with him."

If I didn't know any better, I'd assume you were a right-wing Christian in denial.

I think I read somewhere that the victim has diabetes, so I think it was especially f*cked up that this guy was targeted for having such a serious illness. diabetephobes make me sickest of all the phobes

...also he's a huge fan of twilight, which is why he kinda deserved it

Based on the evidence, there is no reason to believe he was targeted for any other reason than opportunity.

There is more evidence to suggest he was targeted for being white than for being gay, as the suspects defended their actions by stating that he called them a racial slur.

I've read up on this, the victim's sexuality seems to not have been the reason for the attack. But the they had to try of course because the attacker is a Black man. God bless.

If someone called me a spic under their breath I wouldn't go mental on them like that. A bruise will heal...

I see what youre doing!

It was assault. Hate crime? Not for me to decide. If the man is apprehended, he will get his day in court,. I'm sure the media circus surrounding it will have nothing to do with the verdict.

The only thing they'd have to do is find any homophobic language at all from either of the two. Then this moves from a random attack to a hate crime.

To get the hate crime charge, there needs to be a body of evidence that supports that. Usually, when legit hate crimes based on sexual orientation are committed, there is a vast body of evidence such as yelling homophobic terms, social media, text messages, etc.

If they posted homophobic shit: likely homophobic.

If they didn't: likely not.

However, if it walks like a duck...

Also, the interviews can sometimes reveal motivations and police interrogation techniques can get people to sqwak. Neither of these two men are smart - they'll fall for some of the linguistic traps setup by police. Since the police know that Macy's had the employee on a recorded line, let's see how they can push the "he said the n-word!" narrative.

I am applying it to racial issues now, you fool.

Personally speaking, and from what video evidence I've seen, I would lean toward that it was a hate crime. But again, it's not my decision but the jury's decision.

👆

And that poor man is probably old enough to have been "out" when you still got beaten for being gay if you unfortunate enough to be around those types of haters. Live for decades, think you've overcome the barbaric homophobia of the past, just to be targeted again.

I'd like to think that if the store was busy, multiple people would step in to stop the hateful violence.

For sure. My guess is that if it was a premeditated assault, likely, they surveyed the area beforehand to ensure there was low traffic for an easy exit.

I'm going to admit to something.
