I've reviewed the arguments on this. Here's what we do know:
1. Deaths are being inflated by as much as 25%.
2. Deaths are being under-counted by as much as 25%.
Regardless of which is correct (I think both are true but to different degrees depending on which people or groups are collecting the data), that means our deaths are still fairly accurate. It means we have over a hundred thousand deaths, no matter how accurate the data is.
If you have a credible source that says that deaths are being overcounted, across the board in the US, greater than the 25% error, I'd be interested in that.
The CDC makes it clear that we are likely over-counting pneumonia and influenza deaths as COVID deaths, here:

And the CDC breaks down and talks about the excess deaths and how they could possibly be attributed to COVID-19:

That site indicates we definitely have excess deaths. To your point, the excess deaths all added up to not equal our COVID-19 death count.
Here's what I came up with using their raw data:
We've had 144,202 excess deaths since March and that includes the first couple of weeks in March when we had lower than predicted excess deaths (meaning, that actually made the number lower).
Current COVID-19 deaths: 153,233
So it's off by about 9,000. But the CDC can easily claim it is off by that amount because we don't have all death data loaded into their excess deaths collection.
So regardless of whether or not it is +-25%, excess deaths is a pretty darn good measure. We do have excess deaths and a majority of that is COVID-19 related. Other scientists are looking at this same data and are using it to figure out which percentage of deaths are related to political intervention measures (lockdowns, mask mandates, economic ruin, suicides, stress related deaths from lockdowns, business and hospital shutdowns, etc.) also caused excess deaths.
