You are conflating two different things, yes it is legal for him to cross state lines, i believe ddm said it was illegal for him to open carry at 17 in said state but the act of crossing the state line isn't in itself illegal.
There is no strawmanning rioters, the rioters attacked him. He responded to violence thrown at him from the rioters.
It's not for you to decide what this guy can or cannot defend or where he can travel to in the USA. Anymore than I can decide the same for rioters.
What is clear is that multiple individuals decided to assault kyle and he used his AR to defend himself, much to their dismay.
