Gohan didn't fail, he matched Kefla. Goku's just been holding him back by taking care of every threat.
Especially if the EoZ chapters are still valid. Because by that point, Gohan became a full-blown scholar and had stopped fighting all together.

Yeah, the fact Goku said he had no idea Gohan can fight so well says it all. Dropped right off the radar.
Not even sure why Toriyama bothered, if its not gonna go anywhere. Maybe it was him being salty he never got to make him the MC as planned, and showing off how much potential was being wasted.
Know what would be fun? A post end of Z story, where Uub gets palmed off on Gohan, and mentoring him results in a kind of quasi rivalry that unlocks all of Gohans potential. Uub ironically keeps playing catchup with Gohan like Vegeta does with Goku.
Meanwhile Vegeta and Goku are stunned, wondering how they missed how good he really could have been.
Maybe even have Gohan and Uub both outright surpass Goku, at least for a bit.
I would legit be perfectly fine with the entire series still ending with a retelling of the EoZ chapters. Goku goes off with Oob to train, and DBS ends. I'd rather not get into the GT era and see anything beyond EoZ, but I feel like it's almost inevitable at this point. They just keep milking the series for everything it's worth.
The next arc, for example, is already getting set up and seems like it might focus on the repercussions of Merus's death... But that could honestly be pretty interesting, imo. I'm actually curious if GP plans on punishing Beerus and Whis for letting Merus die..?
