The name of the British royals is the Windsors. They changed the name of their house to Windsor from the "House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha", due to anti-German sentiment in the early 20th century. The husband of Queen Elizabeth is from the House Mountbatten, which was also changed from the German "House Battenberg".

The Church of England has changed its stance on remarrying after divorce, and does not categorically forbid it anymore. And probably more importantly, society as a whole has become a lot more accepting of it. That's why Charles will probably be acceptable as King and Edward VIII was not. And then of course there were political reasons tied in as well.
He was a bit of a womaniser, I guess.

Artol is right, they're the Windsor's now. I wanted to change my name to Windsor because my first name was Andrew..... Andy Windsor. Get it? "And he wins her?" It was funny til that prince ****ing ruined it.

On Phillips side it was Mountbatten from Battenburg I believe.

Phillips is a screwdriver..... and King Edward is a cigar. British logic. 😬
