Hell, he wasn't even a roman catholic, much less an actual bible-believing fundamentalist Christian. He was a roman catholic when he was a kid but he moved away from that in adulthood.

Religion is often a tool wielded and used by dictators and wannabe dictators to further their agenda. It's a really powerful tool for an autocracy, if properly used.
