It's funny how Dead Space 1 final boss is essentially Gears of War 3 intro boss.

All the people who go to Mexico, how often do they get kidnapping by a cartel?

Seems like they're blowing this thing up, statistically you're probably in more danger being kidnapped right here in the US.

Law-enforcement is a lot more lax in Mexico, so it's a lot easier to kidnap people there than it is in the U.S., and yes, kidnappings are substantially more frequent in Mexico. But it depends on where you are in Mexico, tourist spots are normally safe but there are exceptions (like Acapulco).

Finished Dead Space 1 last night, starting Dead Space 2. I see there's a DS1 skin for the Plasma Cutter if you have a save file.

I dunno, I kind of like the idea of an engineer cobbling together a weapon from duct tape, medical equipment, and a flashlight, may keep the base one.

Does raise some questions on why this Frankensteins gun would even need a workbench to upgrade, much less nodes for non official parts..

Have you been to Mexico?

I have! It was a real poopy hole, I don't know how they can live like that. Only good point was this neat waterfall...

...wait a minute..

Never mind.

I just got back from Cancun a few days ago. It is actually insane how tight security is in tourist spots. I went to a resort for my sister's wedding and I had to go through a security checkpoint almost 4 blocks away from the resort itself in order to enter. They held me up for 30 minutes double and triple checking that I was who I said I was and that I was there to see the person that I said I was there to see. Held up so long that my taxi driver got fed up and left and I had to walk from the checkpoint all the way to he resort. Later that night I tried to LEAVE the resort and the same checkpoint wouldn't let me LEAVE the property without verifying who I had visited. It felt like I was visiting the White House or something.

But that's their solution to the cartel problem. As long as you're on the property you're fine, but the moment you're off of it it seems like you're really taking your life into your own hands. Statistically you'll probably be fine even in sketchier neighborhoods, but the risk is always there. Human trafficking and kidnapping is a BUSINESS for the criminal element there that just doesn't exist in North America and western Europe.

Even then, things vary so much within each state.

Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara are both in Jalisco, but are completely different worlds, especially for foreigners.

Just do your research and don't behave like a dumbass and you'll probably be ok. Resorts are usually pretty safe but look it up beforehand. If you're partying in the city, bring a friend who likes being sober and listen to them when you're drunk. If you're going to a big city, learn a little Spanish first. Travel 101, really.

That's great but it's also kind of a non-answer in context, I think. Yes, you should be a smart traveler. Yes you should take precautions. That's all great but you should do that no matter where you go, whether it's Mexico City or Tokyo. At the end of the day though it's just a fact that, yes, there is a greater danger to foreigners in Mexico (even the nice places) then there is in many other countries.

A guy on Quora said the smart thing is to always carry a few 20's so you can buy your way out of being murdered, while another guy claimed this is horrible advice and sure to get you killed.

"A guy on Quora said..."

Clearly the best place to get travel security advice.

Better than a comic book website.

Yes and no. As you noted, the security at resorts is intense, and many travellers spend their entire vacation in drunk bliss there. If you venture into the cities, keep your wits about you, with the requisite caution dependant on the city - so like I said, do your research.

Blanket statements about safety in Mexico are about as useless as blanket statements about safety in any other country. There are 31 states and even within each state, things vary significantly. If it sounds like useless, generic advice, it's because the premise of the question is stupid.

That's what I said! The media is treating the kidnapping like it reflects on Mexico as a whole. Sure there's danger there, where isn't there?

Of course my inner conspiracy theory thinks this is all about undercutting the competition from inexpensive Mexican surgery. Just like happened with meds some years back, I had an aunt who got cheap meds from Mexico and never had a problem, yet all you heard from the news was about the risks.

Yeah, risks to Big Pharma profit margins maybe.

Hey you know Pulp Fiction? When did the yuppie artsy druggie thing that Uma Thruman was playing actually begin? Because the Watchmacallit chocolate bar ad from the 80's looks kind of like the same scene;

Worst thing about Trek is the utopian speak to people like Mark Twain. No money, no want, every need met.

Then you meet Quark tempting Odo with a latinum bucket to sleep in, and Odo almost taking the bait.

Clearly there's commerce, that much is obvious. Greed is still very much a thing.

Anyone here ever watch the show ALF? I’m guessing some of you have. I’ve only just recently started watching it and I’m liking it.

Alf is awesome.

The whitebread suburban stereotype has money issues, Alf hands over a pile of money, "How did you get that?" "I sold the wiring in my spaceship, it's all gold. Except for the hand brake that's Platinum."

Treats cats like a snack, he'd yet the family never gets him Chinese. 😂
