i always thought the droids belonged to leia, and that antilles was their LAST master (or possibly that was what they were told to say if captured, or 3po believes it because he was told it after the memory wipe).....alternatively, they could belong to antilles in order to stay close to leia (i don't know why they would have to do this undercover)....it just seems they are seen as family heirlooms, anakin left 3po to look after his mother, when his mother died he took him.....padme took artoo under her wing and kept him close by after that, unless she lent him out to anakin or whoever for a mission, kind of like a good luck charm.....so it always seemed to me that they were both passed on to leia in that same spirit.....
and the reason r5d4's motivator blows out at that precise moment is because........IT'S A MOVIE.......and not a movie like "the pianist" is a movie.....like the wizard of oz is a movie.....
"C-3PO has his memory wiped in Episode 3; R2 doesn't. It's as simple as that." That has been the pre-conceived notion since years before the PT was even made. The idea has always existed, that R2 knew a lot more than he let on, and that in fact, he had known Anakin very well prior to encountering him as Vader. When Episode 1 came out, this idea became more plausible. When Episode 2 came out, it remained very plausible. GL still has the ultimate chance for at least some sort of depth to his characters. People ask, why wouldn't he tell Luke that his father is Vader? It's because he's not an as*hole, duh! He hopes that Luke will come across the information on his own. He allows events to play out according to their natural flow; he doesn't interfere with anything unless he is required to directly save his comrades. Such is the nature of this silent, profound droid.
The droids belong to Leia? Now see, this is where things go funny with the PT. THe original idea of the droids was taht the story was told from the POV of the lower ranks of people in the SW universe. Watch 'Hidden Fortress' and you know. THe whole concept is that they are unanimous, and respresent not the elite. With all this backstory and making them Leia's (if taht is true at all) we lose the very flavour of the droids. That can only be restored by a memory wipe... of both of them. That'd put them back in the lower ranks.
huh???
I don't get it. Yes, it's one of the vehicles (along with Joseph Campbell) that gave Lucas a form to tell his story. We tarvel along with (in this case) the droids. I don't mean a literal cinematographic POV, it's a POV story wise. It's a fairly crucial element to tell such a draatic story from the 'workers' POV. IN 'Hidden Fortres' it was two poor farmers: common folk, people viewers could identify with. That's the idea and therefore quite crucial.
Nope. They seem to be part of the Tantive IV crew and by what's coming out about that kind of ship in ROTS, it might very well be that the Tantive IV is Leia's (or the Organa's) diplomatic ship with Capt. Antilles as captain. It could explain why the droids seem to know here.
Even in TPM we see that R2 is just part of the ship, he's one of the standard droids on board for maintenance. And that again goes with the story purpose of these droids which I explained earlier.
C-3PO knows who she is but doesn't know her by appearance.
Or he's fooled by a simple hood.....
It doesn't seem that Lucas has kept up that thing with the droids in the PT, not as much as the OT.
So, at the end, they are assigned to that ship, you think? That's an interesting idea, it keeps the trustworthy R2-D2 nearby for emergencies...
Yes, a good droid always comes in handy.
And true, the role of the droids has changed in the PT. There's a lot of explaining going on on the hows and where they come from. Boring really, but okay. However, I doubt GL can go as far as changing their role in the OT, so he has to somehow get that back together I think.
3po doesn't know her?.....he says she won't escape this time....this implies there have been many other times that she has been in peril, and that 3po was there.....
they are both servants/tradesmen in the prequels as well....even if they aren't the lowest of low, what queeq says is 100% true.....they are supposed to be "everymen".....i don't see why people are having trouble with this concept....
Me neither.
I think what Cipher and I are saying is that 3po may not know her perosnally or by appearance, he may know OF her, since she's a member of the Alderaan royal family and senator and on board of a diplomatic ship. In fact, the Tantive IV might HER ship, but that doesn't mean that the droids have a personal acquiantance with her.
I rethought what queeq said: I'm saying its not as prevalent in the PT.
And, to me, POV would make more sense if the droids were the main characters. But I know about Hidden Fortress and that made me reconsider...
C-3PO doesn't seem to recognize her when he sees her with R2.
And it is possible to know of someone but not know what they look like, especially lowly "everymen"......
