so you think the earth is big huh? well take a look at this! see how puny we are. there are still bigger things out there but just to let you know how fvcking small we are.

Nice pics really but euh I allready knew that, but nice pics. wink

x_danny_x
your a space man Brutacus, did you know the largest star in existance??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_stars

here is a video that explains from smallest to largest.

http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/java/scienceopticsu/powersof10/

pretty interesting, now the moral of this is .........oh wait, my just exploded after watching it

Brutacus
Well my it's my dads passion really, don't really know what the biggest star is, I guess you know more than me about it, but my dad got a lot of maps and other stuff, so every time I visite him he will tell me some stuff about it.
It's cool I like it and it's impressive.
How small we really are.

~Flamboyant~
That's really cool. But I always thought that Betelgeuse was the largest known in the universe and bigger than Antares.

shock Shit, I knew Earth was small, but not that small

Is there any more info on those planets/suns? Like what galaxies they're in, how far they are away and stuff?

Earth is so small compared to rest of the Universe that it isn't even funny. Just download the Celestia Program and you see what I mean.

Leggy_n_Merry
Well I knew how small it was compared to Jupiter and the Sun and all that but I've never even heard of those other things that are being compared to the Sun and I thought it was cool.

so far from what i read, they are all in our Milky Way Galaxy.

That the thread even exists was proof enough for me. It's one of many current gems, such as 'What Is It Like to Be a White Person?' or something.

The earth is really not bigger than Mars or Venus.........and with all the solar system and galaxies.............we are quite limited and isolated with out knowledge of all the billions of galaxies.

Illumined by a sunbeam, this is an actual photo of the Earth, taken by Voyager 1 from beyond the orbit of Neptune.

Every living thing, every person who's ever lived; every thought, emotion and deed any of us have ever known; every alien, every demon or god ever imagined...it's all right here, on this pale bluish dot.

I'm unimpressed by the pic, but I think about big stuff all the time.

Now give me some Antares-sized titties and I'd be impressed.

Ours is pretty though............It's blue......... cool

we got water as well

That way we can scuba....Can't do that on Venus. sad

I've seen that one before but still cool. We are just a pimple on an ants butt. stick out tongue

Madman_V3N0M
Well Earth is a bit bigger than Mars and Mars a bit bigger than Venus(not a really big difference), BTW Venus has an atmosphere so acidic and hot that if a human were to be teleported there he would vaporise before even having a chance to see anything.

Actually Venus is bigger than Mars. And The Earth is considerably bigger than Mars. But nice try.

Madman_V3N0M
Whoops you were right, put Venus instead of mars and viceversa. As for diameter I think Mars is about twice as small as Earth. But I think Mars has actually more mass than both.

I know..and even then it's just weird.

I don't think I'd have been able to distinguish if you'd ask me the difference between Earth and Venus... But since I'd just seen the picture, I would.

lil bitchiness
I love this thread. And I particularly love how pretentious some people can be. Interesting!

Anyway, cool thread idea. Visual representation of things is far more effective when talking about how tiny we are.

It kind of makes you think why would a ''God'' want to worry about a planet so shockingly insignificant.

Ohhhhhhh so happy here!!

You will weigh less on a smaller planet, so on both Mars and Mercury you will weigh less, but on Jupiter, you will weigh a lot more.

debbiejo
I thought it had to do with the gravitational pull, and Mercury has the strongest............Am I wrong?

PVS
greater mass=greater gravity

debbiejo
and the planets greater to the Sun???

WOW.........I'm like so wrong, imagine that............how far fetched is that?

To find what you would weigh in the gravitational field of another planet, multiply your weight on Earth times the gravitation factor listed in the table below.

Example: I weigh 90 pounds on Earth. On Mercury, I would weigh:

90 pounds X 0.38 = 34.2 pounds

On Neptune, I would weigh:

90 pounds X 1.12 = 100.8 pounds

I think that you would implode before even geting into Jupiters' atmosphere. In fact jupiter is only atmosphere, so you could never be "on" in.

UMMM Jupiter is not only atmosphere. THere is solid ground in jupiter. Ok be it that it may be metallic hydrogen and helium, buts its still ground. The core of jupiter is even hotter than the surface of the sun.

If there were no ground on jupiter, dont you think that when Shoemaker Levy( comet or fragment ) hit it in the 90's would have gone straight through?????

Yeah I knew all that, but I ddn't want to go all technicall, of course that because of it's high gravity it must have something solid at it's core. Thank God for Jupiter! It saved us many times from comets and asteroids and stuff, it'sa big giant hoover.

This sounds very similar to a poster i own. Its from a speech Carl Sagan gave to the astronomical community back in thw 80s.

This actually opens up the idea/discussion of life on other worlds. Astronomers who dedicate their lives trying to find evidence of life on other planets agree that in order for life to evolve as it has here on Earth, a Jupiter size planet is required to protect an Earth like planet from collision with other objects from space.

Life (Human intelligent life) on Earth evolved because Jupiter HAS protected us for millions of years from a giant asteroid or other object essentially wiping us out. In order for intelligent lif to evolve it needs a jupiter like planet to shield it for millions and millions of years.
