Marriage. Is it [I]really[/I] necessary?

Aside from the fact that the bride's name will become that of the groom's, does anything really change when people get married? Do two people really need to get married in order to live happily together? Or is this just another human conceived notion that people got used to?

Necessary to some, but it's never essential unless you have a kid or kids (For name's sake.).

I don't want to have children and therefore never see any reason to marry. Unfortunately it's hard to find females who are free of the conditioning that says they must do both.

I don' t think a marriage certificate would make any difference to Fire and I, nor would the dynamics of our relationship change. There is no need to commit to stay in a relationship if the relationship is one of love.

Why does having children make it necessary? The child will get the father's last name regardless of whether or not the parents are married.

Heh, true. (Why is that anyway? Does the government want us to get married? confused1) But that still doesn't make it necessary.

but there are legal implications for marriage, like community property for example. immigration, joint insurance policies, inheritances, wrongful death benefits for surviving spouse, retirement funds, bereavment leave, the legal ability to decide the funeral rights of a deceased spouse

The act of mariage isn't necessary emotionaly but it brings many legal benefits with it

Touche. Mainly, a lot of economical benefits anyway. Guess it depends on how much you value that sort of thing and what your priorities are. Maybe the next question should be is it worth it to get married. Ultimately, I guess that just depends on who you're marrying though. Lots of complications to go through if it's the wrong person. 🙂

Yes there are the negative sides also such as the battles that happen in divorces.
I like to think when people marry it's for love and the legal aspects is just a formality.

I suppose if you want to get married, then get married. No one says you shouldn't. It may not be for everyone, so they say, but they all end up getting married don't they? But if you are going to do it, then you're going to have to live with THAT consequence, because it's a lot of work to keep a marraige alive. Yet the idea that one marries because of love and fairy tale romance is heading straight for divorce.

Making any relationship work requires a dedication of time and effort, and there are never any guarantees.

I concur.

The financial aspect of the marriage is really the only motivator as far as Im concerned.
I don't think its essential.

If I marry my boyfriend for example, I would automatically acquire Canadian citizenship. Its more convenience than a ''love bond'' as far as marriage goes.

I don't think marriage is necessary for happily ever after.
