Recently DC had a big reboot, going through something akin to what happened after COIE. A lot of continuity was dumped out the window, but some was kept (like Batman's Morrison run and Johns' Green Lantern). The JLA has a new roster. Superman is completely rebooted. Aquaman is being written by Johns (and is awesome). Batman is screwing Catwoman on panel. Lots of things happening, so I'd check out several of the new, renumbered series' if I were you.
You could pick a half dozen random books from the relaunch and you'd end up with at least three really decent ones; the standard is higher than it's been in years imo.
On the Marvel side, the X-Men aren't as shit as they were in the last couple of years, but making Colossus the Juggernaut and Wolverine branching off and setting up his own school kind of means that they aren't so much a happy family anymore.
No f`. way...catwoman? Seriously? I agree with the Avengers not being that good....I`m leaning towards DC at the moment. BTW, thanks for the info! I got Superman 1. It confused me...lol
yeah. it was as close to comic-porn as i've seen in a mainstream book. the catwoman book itself is awesome though, and it makes it work.
there are three supermen atm. one in action comics (his new "origin" story, and its a very good book), the one in jla (he's a bit older, but still quite brash), and the one in Superman, which is the current day one.
I recommend swinging by the "New 52" thread, as we talk about each new release as they come out.
If you're interested in the new 52, there are some really excellent titles. There's also some crap in there that you shouldn't touch if you want to keep your happy memories of some characters.
What's your preferred type of book/character? I'm sure we could give you some more specific recommendations and/or titles to stay away from.

In current DC, you can't go wrong with Action Comics. Imo, the story is good enough that you really don't need to be any kind of Superman 'fan' to enjoy it (it's a lot like Kingdom Come that way.) On the Marvel side, check out S.H.I.E.L.D.. It is a phenomenal read- the best title Marvel had produced in a LONG time, imo.
There are others you might be into depending on your taste in comics, but those would be my 'go-to' books.
