I have watched it.. What we could get is more of it with more backstory. Amazon could definitely top it if they throw enough money and talented people at it.
But you're probably right, if it happens, it likely won't compare. I'm still reeling with what they did with the Wheel of Time series.
What we know so far? That the show is gonna be full with filler-type characters entirely made up by Amazon. Diverse cast for no other reason than to appeal to SJW fanatics.
Getting all of the rights from the Tolkien Estate is next to impossible... and they don't want to touch Peter Jackson's work, as they know damn well they can't match any of it. They want to be considered "canon-adjacent" to it, if possible.
Jackson had the luxury of working with the dream-cast that devoted their hearts to it, back when the Internet wasn't widely available.
Amazon just wants to get more money for the already richest creature in the world with no soul.
Come on now, is a darker skinned guy playing an elf really a problem? I'd be concerned about the acting skills of the actors and the writing being good than aesthetics like skin color or gender.
Just odd whenever there's not White actors cast, it's somehow automatically "SJW" stuff. What if the brown skinned guy just nailed the role during casting?
eg Look at The Wheel of Time series, cast with several people who could barely act, was poorly written and it had nothing to do with "SJW" appeal.
I have no problem with new/original story being mixed in as long as it's A) flows well with the LoTR theme and B) it's good to great writing.
I'm no fan of Bezos, but if this turns out to be dirty ass, I'll stop watching, it's that easy. We live in a time where there's an over abundance of television to watch.
It is a problem. Tolkien went very deep into the lore of the elves and a black elf does not fit within it. If they wanted black characters, there are plenty of ways of doing it and keeping it within Tolkien’s established world. But that would be slightly more difficult so they just went with the easy way out.
The difference is, Jackson actually had the the rights to the vast bulk of what he was adapting.
^ He did, but he was also missing Silmarillion and other works... that's why his version of Gandalf "forgot" the names of blue wizards in An Unexpected Journey, for example.
Sure. But my point is that he at least had the material for what he was adapting and not only a small portion of it like is the case for this show. Now they were always going to have to make a good deal of fanfic for a Second Age show, but without the Sil they're going to have to make up (and contradict) far more than I initially thought.
While I personally would have liked to see a bearded female dwarf, that again isn't something that will break the show.
Again, I'm okay with those additions as long as it flows with LoTR themes and the end product is good to great, just like Jackson's vision was.
Come Sept I'm walking into this as "inspired by LoRT", not a verbatim adaptation of Tolkein's works. Join me, lets walk into this together, friend Stilt
Though in an ideal world, some huge company like Netflix, Amazon, HBO gets the full rights to Tolkien's works and they do a long multi-season top-tier animated series that is fully faithful to the writings. That would be epic and I'd probably jizz while watching it.
We have the rights solely to The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, the appendices, and The Hobbit. And that is it. We do not have the rights to The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The History of Middle-earth, or any of those other books.
I can't claim to have read everything Tolkien wrote, but I feel like I've read enough by this point to not be very encouraged by it. From what I heard, they've already messed up The Wheel of Time, and if it's true what I've heard about this (condensing a thousand years worth of stories in to a short period, moving characters around to suit it etc), I'm not encouraged.
Jackson had to do the same thing (adapting the story to an extent to fit the project), so there's always the chance it'll be good, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.
